Top 10 Baby Rompers

Top 10 Baby Rompers

Let’s talk Baby patterns!

You may be entering the stage of life where there is lots of baby knitting happening. Whether you are going to be a Grandparent, Aunt, Mom or just a special friend of an expectant Mom, here are some great pattern ideas for you to knit.

You might call these rompers or onsies, or even overalls. They are all really cute, pretty quick to make, and something the new mom will treasure. I have been diving into romper patterns and I want to share my 10 favorite one piece patterns.

Waterfall Romper by Aethalia O'Connor

This pattern is knit in DK and uses size 4 US, 3.5 mm needles and is sized from small newborn to 9- 18 month. 5 sizes. The pattern is available in English. The price is 10 NZD, which is 5.93 US.

The Waterfall romper will soon become your go to knit for a new baby with its simple intuitive design. It is perfect for year-round wearing, use cotton yarn for summer and wool yarn for winter.

This pattern is worked from the bottom upwards. The front and back bottoms are worked flat separately before being joined to work in the round for the body section. The work is then split again to work the top front and back sections flat before finishing with the shoulder straps.

This can be for a girl or a boy, but I think this is a really good option for a little boy.

Palheiro Baby Playsuit by Sandra Magaheas

This cute onsie was published this year, July 2025. It is knit in sport weight yarn on size 4 (3.5mm) & size 2.5 (3.00 mm) needles.

I love the stripping pattern, but of course you could also do this as a solid or a solid as the main color with contrasting borders.

The Palheiro Baby Playsuit is a comfortable piece with a casual style! Inspired by the traditional Aveiro houses painted with stripes, in the north of Portugal, this design also reminds me of the retro swimsuits from the 1920s.

This playsuit is knitted in the round and in stockinette stitch, from the bottom up.
All the edges are picked up and knitted afterwards in garter stitch.

The instructions are written, but there is also a video tutorial. It is sized from Premie to 24 months and is available in English & Portuguese. The price is 4 Euros or $4.86, but there is a sale right now on the Etsy shop, 25% off if you buy 4 items.

Lacey is a sweet baby romper, designed to be easily knit in just two pieces. It is a clever combination of vintage design and more modern use of stocking and garter stitch, creating a timeless romper. There are instructions for two different stitch patterns for the central panel – chevrons and diamonds – which are easily integrated into the instructions.

Ruffle Romper by Pernille Larsen for Knitting for Olive

Fingering weight yarn on US 1.5 and 2.5, which is 2.5 and 3 mm needles.

This pattern is available in English and 7 other languages, and is sized 3 month to 24 months, and there are 4 sizes. The price is 50 Danish Kroners, which is $8.13 US.

Ruffle Romper is a simple romper featuring a decorative ruffle on the yoke. It is worked from the top down in stockinette stitch using 1 strand of Merino, Cotton Merino or Pure Silk. The romper can be knit with or without sleeves - a Merino version with sleeves for fall and winter, and a Cotton Merino or Pure Silk version without sleeves for spring and summer for example, would be lovely.

The first part of the yoke is worked back and forth to create the keyhole opening at back neck. Afterwards, the body is worked in stockinette stitch in the round down to the crotch where front and back crotch are worked separately back and forth. The optional sleeves are worked in the round from the top down. Stitches are picked up around the yoke for the ruffle and the ruffle subsequently worked in the round. Sleeve length can easily be adjusted.

This cute romper is mostly stockinette but has a cute garter stitch pocket on the front. Tiriltunge Newborn Onsie by Shja

This pattern is 50 Norwegian Kroners, which is $5.22. Tiriltunge uses fingering weight yarn and uses US 2.5 and 1.5, which is 3 mm and 2.5 mm. The pattern is available in English, German, Norwegian and Russian. She does not have a website or and Etsy store, so it looks like this one is only available on Ravelry.

Sizes are 0-3 moth – 18-24 months. This is a completely new and revised pattern. New sizes have been added and the pattern is now sized from premature up to 24 months.

The pattern includes a new chart that covers the entire front and back panels. It has clear instructions including photos to help you knit this beautiful onesie.

Note however this is not a pattern for the faint of heart, it requires intermediate knitting skills and a clear head. There are a lot of details in this pattern and being knit all in one piece saves you the trouble of seaming, but it can be a bit tricky to get started.

The pattern is knit top down using raglan increase and the sleeves are knit on double pointed needles.
